First Week of School!

This first week of school went much better than I had hoped for. I was worried about how Landon would do, having his MOTHER as his teacher, but I was pleasantly surprised when he separated the two on his own, calling me Mrs. Gibb. He followed every instruction and seemed to enjoy what he was learning. Here are some pictures from our week:

First Day of School!

MATH: Place Value Snake
Each tray of the snake stood for a place value. I would put a few things in it, like dice or marbles, and then Landon would have to tell me the number and write it down.

 SCIENCE: Collaborating With a Partner
We had to each choose something we were interested in and come up with a project that would share both of our interests. Landon's was robots and mine was crafting. We then had to make a plan and resolve any conflicts that we had. There was a bit of discussion on how to make the spaceship and robot but overall we communicated and compromised pretty well.

 MUSIC: Percussion Instruments
Landon learned about percussion instruments and then it was time to make his own. He learned about high and low pitches and how to make his instrument's pitch get higher or lower. He also realized that his instrument was just like a xylophone.

 SCIENCE: Collecting Quantitative Data
Landon learned the difference between qualitative and quantitative data. He had to do two experiments but pictured is his quantitative data collecting experiment. He had to make three airplanes and measure each one by length and wingspan. Then he had to fly each one (twice) and record how far each one flew. Last of all, he had to write about what he discovered that would make a paper airplane go far. Did it make any difference if the paper was heavier or lighter, if the size of the plan mattered, was it being thrown exactly the same way every time, etc.?

 ART: Household Letters
We read the book, Alphabet City by, Stephen T. Johnson. In it he painted pictures showing capital letters from scenes he saw around his town. So Landon had to go around the house and take pictures of letters that he spotted. Here are a few of his findings...

SOCIAL STUDIES: Viking Longboat
Landon is learning about Vikings in Social Studies. Here is a model of a Viking Longboat, also known as a Dragon Boat.

  1. WoW! Looks like so much fun! Landon you are so lucky to have a smarty pants teacher like Mrs. Gibb. She will help you accomplish some pretty amazing things! Keep up the good work. Love, Aunt Charisa
